A 360° video can be an input to a reconstruction workflow, but importing a video does not guarantee a usable model. Camera movement, image quality, projection, occlusion and intended output all need a representative feasibility test.

Distinguish playback from reconstruction

Looking around a panoramic video is playback; estimating surfaces and positions is reconstruction. Rotation from one position generally does not provide the new parallax required for geometry. Appropriate movement and matchable detail matter. A clip that looks clear in a viewer may still be unsuitable for producing a useful mesh.

Treat frame extraction as an input step

RealityScan documents extracting video frames for subsequent alignment and processing. That does not establish direct compatibility for every equirectangular 360° frame under a standard camera model. Match the projection to the tool’s supported workflow. Extracting more frames cannot restore unseen surfaces or detail lost to motion blur.

Check spherical-image support

The Agisoft Metashape Professional 2.2 manual documents a spherical camera model for equirectangular images. Confirm the version, calibration settings and output quality in the actual project. Include stitching seams, reflections, moving people and low-texture surfaces in the sample instead of demonstrating only the easiest part of the scene.

Define a small feasibility deliverable

Supply a representative clip, capture settings, scene conditions and intended use. Record software version, frame selection, alignment, missing surfaces and processing effort. Dimensional applications also need reference scale and a checking method. No WEDO benchmark is claimed here: this is a test plan for assessing feasibility, not a guaranteed reconstruction outcome.

Let the use case determine the next step

A tour may be better served by a dedicated capture. A game environment also needs cleanup, materials, collision and performance work. Engineering measurement requires a separate method and error assessment. Agree on acceptable defects and file requirements, then use the feasibility result to decide whether full production is justified.

A quick commissioning checklist

  • Does the footage provide useful movement, sharpness and surface detail?
  • Do projection, software version and calibration settings match?
  • Has a representative test documented defects and usable outputs?
