Highlights prioritise selection and pace; a full recording prioritises continuity and reference value. Both can be produced, but sound, camera coverage and delivery must be planned before the event.

Choose by viewing purpose

Highlights can introduce atmosphere, themes and memorable moments. Rewatching talks, training or reference use calls for complete or session-based recordings. Identify who will watch and in what context before choosing the main version. Duration does not determine quality; suitability for the intended viewing task does.

Capture material for a highlights story

Establishing shots, interactions, reactions and details help connect stage moments into a coherent edit. Identify important segments and consider short interviews where useful. Editing can compress time, but it cannot recover an absent subject, and it should preserve the intended meaning of statements rather than reversing it through selection.

Protect continuity and intelligibility

Plan continuous coverage, stage and audience-question audio, and interruptions for battery or storage changes. Decide whether presentation files will be supplied and composited into the output. A camera running throughout an event does not automatically ensure intelligible speech or readable slides for the final viewer.

Set priorities when producing both

When full coverage is essential, protect the continuous view and audio first, with roaming detail coverage supporting highlights. The same person may not be able to serve both purposes at once. Under limited resources, preserve one complete priority session rather than capturing incomplete fragments of every session.

Organise delivery around use

A highlights package may include promotional cutdowns, while long recordings benefit from speaker or session organisation. Confirm subtitles, covers, titles, download access and any viewing restrictions. Have the organiser review material containing non-public information, and label every version by its purpose so the right file is shared later.

A quick commissioning checklist

  • Is the main purpose promotion or complete reference?
  • Are continuous picture and sound planned for essential segments?
  • Are long and short versions listed as distinct deliverables?
